Mindful Hike, with Vik (Sat. Nov. 30, 2019)

Join us for a mindful day of hiking in the Opal Creek Wilderness to work off your Thanksgiving celebrations. This easy and very popular 10-mile hike will take us through an ancient forest with 1,000-year-old trees that tower 250 feet high. The hike has 500 feet of elevation gain. Hike is on, rain, snow or shine. However, if the roads are not passable due to snow, a different hike will be substituted.

Vik Anantha, a longtime sangha participant and hiking enthusiast, will be leading the hike on Saturday Nov. 30, 2019.

We will reflect on impermanence on this hike. Please watch this  VIDEO   for a quick refresher.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Physical fitness is required. Hiking experience is nice to have, but not required. Let me know and I can help you with your hiking essentials. Will send out more details for those who "sign up". You need to be prepared to spend 9 hours or so outdoors. You will need to bring water, snacks, lunch, adequate clothing, “10 hiking essentials”. Hiking poles are required. Boot traction devices like https://www.rei.com/product/890608/kahtoola-microspikes-traction-system are highly recommended. Also, another thing to add to your hiking kit is a pair of gaiters for possible snow travel (https://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/gaiters.html). We are in Oregon fall weather. The hike will go on “rain, snow or shine”. Bring rain gear and extra clothes to change into back at the trailhead.

What is "Wilderness" and why are we choosing it as a backdrop for mindfulness?

Here are mindful teachings masquerading as the 1964 Wilderness Act:

"A wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his own works dominate the landscape, is hereby recognized as an area where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man, where man himself is a visitor who does not remain"

Hope to spend a mindful hiking day with you all.
