Buddhist Movie Night at PIMC: "Brother Sun, Sister Moon" (Sat., 7/20/19, 6:30pm)

Please join us for another edition of Buddhist Movie Night at Portland Insight Meditation Community (PIMC). We'll be watching "Brother Sun, Sister Moon" on Saturday, July 20, 2019.  The screening will begin at 6:30pm.

This is a chance to come together as a community, enjoy Buddhist/mindfulness-themed cinema, and discuss how the material relates to our understanding of the Buddha and the Dharma.

Mikki and Chanel will be hosting the movie night and leading the discussion afterward. It will be a very mellow, low key affair. Please come, bring a snack to share if you like, and enjoy.

Brother Sun, Sister Moon (Italian: Fratello Sole, Sorella Luna) is a 1972 film directed by Franco Zeffirelli and starring Graham Faulkner and Judi Bowker. The film is an examination of the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. The film presents an inspiring and edifying portrait of St. Francis's spiritual practice of devotion and his humble life of service.

Saint Francis of Assisi (Italian: San Francesco d'Assisi, Latin: Sanctus Franciscus Assisiensis), born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, informally named as Francesco (1181/1182 – 3 October 1226), was an Italian Catholic friar, deacon and preacher. He founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women's Order of Saint Clare, the Third Order of Saint Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land. Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in history.

Pope Gregory IX canonized Francis on 16 July 1228. Along with Saint Catherine of Siena, he was designated Patron saint of Italy. He later became associated with patronage of animals and the natural environment, and it became customary for Catholic and Anglican churches to hold ceremonies blessing animals on his feast day of 4 October. He is often remembered as the patron saint of animals.

Franco Zeffirelli, Suso Cecchi D'Amico, Kenneth Ross, and Lina Wertmuller co-authored the screenplay with some fictionalizations added to the true story of St. Francis of Assisi. Brother Sun, Sister Moon is a gorgeous piece of filmmaking with opulent outdoor photography and stunning views of Assisi, the towers of San Gimignamo, and Monreale's great basilica. The folk songs — written and sung by Donovan — give the film its parabolic beauty and emotional impact.
